The ASMR Career Mentor linkage program
ASMR has developed a web-based Career Mentor Linkage Program where mid career (5-12 years postdoc) ASMR members have the opportunity to be matched to a career mentor, free of charge. The web-based approach allows for the mentoree to choose an appropriate mentor with ease.
This ASMR initiative is based on the alarming results of a survey of delegates attending the ASMR Professional Development Program 2007-08 for mid-career medical researchers which revealed that greater than one third of the delegates did not have a career mentor.
The career mentor program is the first of its kind for health and medical research scientists in Australia. Mentoring is considered vitally important for career development, but this element of support has not been available in the health and medical research area or indeed, the science sector as a whole.
The aim of the program is to provide ASMR members with the opportunity to be mentored in career development. The scheme fits well with ASMR's mission to promote and foster suitable career structures for persons engaged in medical research at the professional level. ASMR is ideally placed to implement the program via its broad core membership and affiliations.
